Need-Based Financial Aid

We encourage all students to apply for financial aid. Admissions decisions are made independently of the financial aid process. Applying for financial aid will not negatively affect your chances for admission to the University. Syracuse University will award financial aid to the extent that funds are available, therefore we cannot guarantee that the full need of all students will be met.

General Information

To be considered for Syracuse University grants and federal financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the College Scholarship Service (CSS) PROFILE. Eligibility for need-based financial aid is established by analyzing the information you provided on the CSS PROFILE and the FAFSA. It is important that you submit the FAFSA and CSS PROFILE on time since awards are made on a funds-available basis. If the information required to complete the FAFSA and CSS PROFILE is not available by the deadline, you should estimate the information and file on time.

FAFSA

Complete and submit the FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/   To assist you in completing your online FAFSA application, the Department of Education has published the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet. The Worksheet is the best tool for gathering the information you will need to complete the online application. Worksheets are available online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ or in paper form at your guidance counselor's office.

If this is the first time you are filing a FAFSA, both you and your parents need to request a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Department of Education online at http://www.pin.ed.gov/. The PIN is your electronic signature and is required to process the FAFSA. You and your parents should request a PIN before you complete the FAFSA online.

To have the FAFSA information sent to Syracuse University you must list SU on your FAFSA. Syracuse University's Department of Education Title IV code is 002882 and our address is Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY 13244.

After the FAFSA is processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) from the Department of Education. The SAR states the information you submitted on the FAFSA. It is important that you check the SAR to ensure it is accurate and complete. Syracuse University will be listed on your SAR, if your FAFSA information is sent to us.

All students who file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are considered for federally funded financial aid programs.

CSS PROFILE

Complete the CSS PROFILE online at the College Board web site. To have the CSS PROFILE information sent to Syracuse University you must list SU on the form. The CSS PROFILE school code is 2823 and our address is Syracuse University, Syracuse NY, 13244.

Syracuse University awards need-based grants to students based on eligibility from the CSS PROFILE.

Additional information

New York State residents may be eligible for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). If you are a New York State resident you should complete the FAFSA, and indicate on the FAFSA you will be attending a school in New York State. The New York State Higher Educational Services Corporation (HESC) will send you information after you file the FAFSA.
