Visiting SU FAQ

Visiting a campus is the best way to get a feel for a school and thousands of prospective students visit SU throughout the year.   We encourage you to make the most of your visit by attending an information program, taking a campus tour, or meeting with someone in your college of interest.  We hope to see you on campus!

Can I stay in a residence hall when I visit campus?

There is no official overnight program available.


When is the Office of Admissions open? (summer/regular hours)
The Office of Admissions is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. during the academic year. We are also open select Saturday mornings throughout the fall. Please see our visitation web page at http://www.syr.edu/futurestudents/undergraduate/visitus/oncampus.html for more information.

Are Open Houses offered during the fall/spring?

 We will hold four Fall Receptions this year on October 19th & 26th and November 12th & 16th.


What kind of activities are offered during Fall Receptions?

These full day events give you the opportunity to explore all that Syracuse University has to offer.   Meet representatives from admissions, visit your college of interest to hear from faculty and current students, take a walking tour of campus and tour a residence hall. 


How do I register for a Fall Reception?
Please call us at 315-443-6311 and we will assist you.

Will I be able to tour a residence hall?
Due to privacy and security reasons, we are only able to provide residence hall tours during our Fall Receptions/Spring Campus Days. You may view a 360 degree virtual tour of a variety of rooms and suites at http://housingmealplans.syr.edu/facilityinformation_virtualtour.cfm

What is included on a campus tour?
Campus tours are led by current students and include various stops in academic buildings, along with SU history and traditions. Please wear comfortable walking shoes! If anyone in your party needs special transportation or other accommodations, please let us know ahead of time.

How long does the campus tour last?
The campus tour lasts approximately one hour.

How long does the Information Program last?
Typically, information sessions last for about 90 minutes, but may vary based on audience questions.

What is included in the Information Program?
Information Programs include a viewing of the University video, information about academics, Syracuse University culture, application methods and statistics, and a question-and-answer session with a member of the Admissions Committee.

Where is the Admissions parking lot?
The University Avenue Garage is located at 705 University Avenue, between Adams Street and Harrison Avenue. Please visit http://www.syr.edu/futurestudents/undergraduate/visitus/directandpark.html for directions.

Where are some good places to eat?
Marshall Street is located just a few steps from campus and provides a variety of quick service options; also, many visitors enjoy eating in a campus dining hall. Visitors who will be staying overnight may want to visit Armory Square or other areas downtown for dinner; please see our staff for recommendations!

Where can I spend the night when I visit?
There are accommodations both on campus and nearby. Please visit http://www.syr.edu/futurestudents/undergraduate/visitus/accommodations_vu.html for a list of area hotels and motels.

How close is the airport/train & bus stations?
Syracuse is served by most major airlines, Amtrak, and Greyhound Bus. Hancock International Airport and the Regional Transportation Center are only a few miles from campus and are served by taxis.

Can I make an appointment to speak with an admissions representative?
An appointment is not required. Excluding our Fall Receptions, admissions staff is available for your questions during regular business hours at the Office of Admissions.

Do I need an appointment to visit campus?

The Office of Admissions provides information programs and campus tours Monday - Friday and select Saturdays.  We encourage visitors to schedule an appointment by calling 315-443-3611.  We suggest that you review the Visit Us section of this site for current visitation options.


Can I talk with current students during my visit?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to speak with current students during your visit.  All campus tours are led by students and we often have students working in the Office of Admissions who will participate in many of the information programs.  Remember, our students were in your shoes a short time ago making decisions about college.  They are happy to answer your questions!


Can I meet with someone regarding my specific academic area of interest?

Yes.  In addition to an information program and campus tour, we encourage students to visit their college of interest when visiting SU. Students often make arrangements to meet with a college representative or professor to learn more about their program of interest, tour facilities, or in some cases even sit in on a class. Several of our colleges also offer daily information sessions specific to their programs. When you call our office to register for a campus tour or information program, we will be happy to assist you with making an appointment at one of the individual colleges.   You may also contact your college of interest directly to schedule an appointment.


When is the best time to visit campus?

The best time to visit campus is when classes are in session. That way you can see the campus in action. However, we understand that this may not be possible for you and your family. Many students visit during the summer for an information program and campus tour, or attend one of our Summer Campus Days.   Our office is also open most days during Winter Break.
